In the video library you will find live action videos of our instructor, Grand Master Chan Yu, the founder of Yu's Academy. In addition, you will see demonstrations from some of our students. We are happy to share the excitement of being a student at Yu's Academy through these videos.
In the Yu's Academy yearbook you will see the history of our school with a full listing of all the black belts that have been awarded. The list is quite lengthy, as we have awarded thousands of black belts in this community. If you have received your black belt at our school, you will find your name in this book.
Martial Arts is a fascinating program and is practiced all over the world. The students of martial arts soon find that it is much more than self-defense - it is a way of life. The character development that is taught while learning martial arts is what makes it so popular with adults and children.
Our Academy was founded by Grand Master Chan Yu. Grand Master Yu left Seoul, South Korea with a dream of starting a martial arts school and spreading the martial arts culture throughout the world. His dream became a reality on July 27, 1974 when he arrived at Kansas City International Airport to begin his American journey. His arrival was greatly anticipated by the small martial arts community that existed in the St. Joseph area at that time. A group of students was waiting for Grand Master Yu when he arrived and he held his first class that same day. The students were so impressed by Grand Master Yu's character and technique that the word quickly spread of his arrival and the classes quickly filled with newcomers. Some of the students who started with Grand Master Yu still practice under his guidance at Yu's Academy.
At Yu's Academy's 25th Anniversary in 1999, the mayor of St. Joseph presented a proclamation declaring May 15, 1999 as Grand Master Chan Yu Day. This proclamation was awarded to Grand Master Yu for the contributions he has made to the community and for being a strong advocate of education. Grand Master Yu encourages his students to pursue reading programs in addition to their schoolwork. He also teaches Self-Control and that the greatest warrior is one who is capable of defending himself but has never fought because he uses his mind to solve all problems.
Today, Yu's Academy continues to grow due to the high quality teaching program that began in 1974. Through our emphasis on traditional martial arts instruction, students learn Courtesy, Integrity, Self-Control, Perseverance, Self-Confidence and Self-Respect. These lessons become an integral part of the student's life. Lifelong bonds and friendships are forged with the other students and instructors. In fact, some of our members, who started when they were children, are still with us as adults and have enrolled their own kids in our programs in order to pass down the valuable lessons they have learned at Yu's Academy! We are proud of the generations of families that continue to practice at the Academy and achieve their black belts. In fact over half of our students are practicing with family members. Working out as a family is a great way to bond while learning something new, exciting and educational.
Yu's Academy of Martial Arts has been serving the St. Joseph community since 1974. Our instructors have an extensive knowledge of our well-proven teaching system, and are ready to help you reach your goals as a martial artist. We are open to students of all ages, beginning at the age of 5. Our class schedule is very flexible to help accommodate all the different schedules of our students.
From the first moment you step onto the mat you realize you are part of something special. The instructors greet you with respect and quickly teach you the proper etiquette to follow as a student. As you become a black belt and leader at Yu's Academy, you will want to do the same.
