Personal Essay by Jessica
Love
for 3rd Dan Testing
Yu’s Academy
has been my home for several years. I’ve
experienced life here: heartbreak, struggles, victories, lasting
relationships. I remember the first time
I won a tournament and presenting my 3 feet trophy to the class. I remember each time I excitedly presented my
grade card to Master Yu. I remember the
first time I did a jumping roundhouse kick and resulted on the ground because
of a kick to the rib cage. The first time
I pledged to control my temper and count to ten was at Yu’s Academy. All-in-all a lot of “firsts” happened to me
here. Being able to
experience the typical obstacles while growing up at one set, safe “home,” I
think makes my life special.
It’s weird to think about
progressing ranks back then. I don’t
think I was as concerned as I am now.
Me: an assistant instructor? It’s hard to believe. On top of worrying about today, I have
college, auditions for a new show, and then my social life on my mind. Typical high-school senior,
right? And then next year I’m gone.
But we’re focusing on the
“now.” Right now, I’m most likely
sitting on the wall next to my brother, Mr. Love, or one of the Sims’ kids,
smiling. I’m also probably really
nervous. This testing means a lot to
me. Not only am I testing for 3rd
Dan, but I’m testing for the last time, for a long time. For almost nine years I’ve regularly tested,
or been to every available testing, and now the countdown begins. This testing is like seeing my past efforts
all poured out into one morning’s worth of performance, for one title. It’s pretty big….and I’m totally awe-struck
of the situation.
Well, I want to say something
inspirational, something that you all will remember and cherish, but I don’t
think I can. I’ve found that in Martial
Arts that you learn and remember more through experience and action, so today I
guess I want everyone to see me and remember me for what I’ve done, not what
I’ve said. And I hate to repeat
something, but seriously, actions do speak louder than words. Take bows for example. Instead of saying, “I respect you, and now
we’re gonna kick each other,” we simply bow the 90
degrees and then get into fighting stance as a sign of respect. Showing respect and passion in what you do
reflects so much to people. And I
guarantee that if you aren’t passionate about what you’re doing, it shows and
you only make yourself look bad. So find
something you love and stick to it! Because it will make you,
as a person, greater than you can imagine. You’ll be so happy… I know that I am because
I’ve dedicated myself to Hap Ki Do and theatre, and have accomplished so
much. Grandmaster Yu’s passion for
starting an academy and teaching came true.
The instructors are passionate, dedicated students, and look where they
are now – teaching us! You all can do
it!
I want to say thank you to everyone here. Without the support of my Yu’s Academy
family, I firmly believe I wouldn’t have accomplished the things I have. Thank you to my immediate family for their
love and encouragement to follow my dreams.
Thank you to my partner, Mr. Josh Sims, who’s also one of my closest
friends. Josh, buddy, you make every
sparring and sulgi practice a good time. Ohh, and good luck today!
Thanks to the instructors especially Instructor Love, my dad, for
teaching me a lot of what I know, not just in Hap Ki Do, but also in life. And finally, thank you to Grandmaster
Yu. Thank you for the gift of time- time
to grow, time to be with my family, time to gain friends, and time to acquire
the skills to a healthy and happy life.
Once again thank you to all! And good luck to everyone at testing!
